New feature: Interactive Full Text Search

January 11th, 2008

_r2_c21.jpgToday we have added our most significant new feature that not only works well, but also looks amazing. We introduce you our next web 2.0 feature – Interactive Full Text Search. We encourage everyone to try it and see how it works at http://history.im.

We’ve been developing different solutions for searching in a browser through large history logs and finally made a search that looks user friendly and at the same time it helps you to search even faster than conventional search methods (we’ve actually tested the speed of search in logs on a panel of users).

Besides Interactive Full Text Search in this release we have also made changes to page navigation and fixed some minor bugs.

Cool feature. It’s a pretty slick interface… but at first I couldn’t find it. My laptop is only a 12″ screen, so my browser window isn’t very wide. As a result, the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the history viewer was covering the search. I had to widen the browser window WAY beyond the limits of my screen to get rid of the scroll bar and see the search.
    (Firefox 2.0.0.11 / Mac OS X 10.4.11 / 12″ iBook)

I haven’t been using Simkl very long, so all of my logs are fairly short. I wonder how will this scale once the logs are much larger. Do you plan to allow us to filter (or maybe hide/collapse) parts of a contact’s log file, by date range, or month/year?

  2. Andrew Masyk Says:

Eric, yeah, probably a 12 inch screen is too short compared to standard 15′ or 17′. We are working on shorter versions for mobile phones, so this may work for your 12′.

The scalability is almost limitless, when you have a lot of text we have separate pages and search opens exactly the page where the next result is found with your keyword even if you have 100 pages or more.

And yes, we want to make a simple feature to select a day\week\month\year\

  3. Andrew Masyk Says:

Erick, can you tell me what is your screen size in pixels?

  4. Eric Says:

Sorry, I suppose that would be more helpful than just the size in inches! My display is 1024×768.

Did you just make an update? This looks like it’s been fixed!

  5. Daniel Says:

Respect!!! A real creative solution for search. Very good feature.

  6. Janusz Says:

So this is fulltext but in just one conversation? I mean its great. But it would be even more useful if you could search across whole your saved history.

  7. Andrew Masyk Says:

You will end up getting too many results and it will take a long time to sort them all out. People tend to write in the same words almost to all of their friends. There’s a 90% chance that when you’re searching for something you already know who you were talking to.
